Jan Amos KOMENSKÝ - life, work, legacy

The Press

Pres Boží, to jest Kratičké rozvážení slov Jeremiáše proroka Tlačil Pán presem Pannu, dceru jůdskou: v kterémž se cíle a užitečnosti trápení a zámutků při pobožných vyhledává a považuje

The Press of God, that is, brief reflections on the words of Jeremiah the prophet,“the Lord has trodden as in a wine press the virgin daughter of Judah”; in which the purpose and use of suffering and distress are sought and weighed by the pious

Origin of the work:

1624 Prague

Comenius attempted to invest this tract, too, with thoughts of comfort and support in coming to terms with the difficult circumstances of the evangelicals after the defeat at the Battle of White Mountain.

The point of departure is provided by the words of the prophet Jeremiah (Old Testament, the Lamentations of Jeremiah, 1:15), which are taken and applied to the contemporary situation of the evangelicals. Further evidence is drawn from elsewhere in the Bible. The work was issued in print, and was also disseminated in copy form.
