Comenius attempted to invest this tract, too, with thoughts of comfort and support in coming to terms with the difficult circumstances of the evangelicals after the defeat at the Battle of White Mountain.
The point of departure is provided by the words of the prophet Jeremiah (Old Testament, the Lamentations of Jeremiah, 1:15), which are taken and applied to the contemporary situation of the evangelicals. Further evidence is drawn from elsewhere in the Bible. The work was issued in print, and was also disseminated in copy form.
