A Lusatian culture settlement stood on the site of Szczecin some 2500 years ago. Szczecin received its charter as a town in 1243. It is the cultural centre of the western part of the country.

In 1656 Comenius travelled from Silesia to the Netherlands via Frankfurt am der Oder, Szczecin, Hamburg and Groningen.
