The Netherlands. Port at the mouth of the Rhine on the North Sea.

Rotterdam is first mentioned in the 11^th century. In was fortified in 1272, received its charter as a town in 1340, was ceded by Francis of Brederode to Maximilian of Austria in 1480, came under Spanish control in 1572 and soon thereafter attached itself to the Dutch estates general. The city underwent enormous economic growth during the second half of the 19^th century.

Comenius visited Rotterdam during his vacation through German and the Netherlands in 1613.
