Rotterdam is first mentioned in the 11th century. In was fortified in 1272, received its charter as a town in 1340, was ceded by Francis of Brederode to Maximilian of Austria in 1480, came under Spanish control in 1572 and soon thereafter attached itself to the Dutch estates general. The city underwent enormous economic growth during the second half of the 19th century.
Comenius visited Rotterdam during his vacation through German and the Netherlands in 1613.
