Jan Amos KOMENSKÝ - life, work, legacy

Reflections on perfection

Přemyšlování o dokonalosti křesťanské, kterouž Bůh vyvoleným svým v slovu svém ukazuje; Duchem svým vnitř vnuká; a ji v nich k nevypravitedlnému jejich potěšení rozličnými libými i odpornými věcmi rozněcuje a k plnosti přivodí

Reflections on Christian perfection, which God shows His chosen through His words; which His Spirit whispers within; and which He inflames to ineffable joy through diverse things both delightful and abhorrent, bringing it to completeness.

Contents:

The first of a series of “consolation” texts, originally dedicated to Comenius` first wife Magdalena Vizovská in the difficult period at the onset of the Thirty Years` war. He attempts to overcome his own despair and that of his fellow believers through concentrated meditation on basic Christian values and how they might be attained, and how all are bound to them, even the one who is suffering. He deals in turn with various complications in life (illness, poverty, orphanhood).
