This is a collection of 16 exile religious songs, to the publication of the which by the Unitas Fratrum Comenius contributed. Several originated in translations from the German. A Prayer for the Present Time is appended. The songs served as a support and a reassurance for the coreligionists in their exile.

The songs resonate with the grief for their lost homes and homeland, as well as for their slighting, of the exiles abroad, but also with their robustness, moral strength and firmness of faith. Several attain Biblical power and pathos.
