A Slavic settlement and stronghold from the 10th century, from the 13th century part of the Hanseatic League (an association of trading cities), and taken by Prussia in 1792 after the second division of Poland. From 1920 under the administration of the League of Nations, and after the Second World War part of Poland.
In September and October 1646 Comenius travelled to Sweden with Petr Figulus (taking ship from Gdansk), where he met with the Chancellor Axel Oxenstiern and Queen Christina.
