On May 2nd 1623 Comenius’ library was incinerated on the square in Fulnek at the instigation of the Capuchin missionary Father Bonaventura of Kolín, by students of the former local Brethren school and Catholic school. These supposedly “heretical” books had, after Comenius’ departure from Fulnek, been kept in the town hall. A description of the burning of Comenius’ library at Fulnek in 1623 appears in Bonaventura’s report to the Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith in Rome. More detailed information is available in, for example, Jaroslav Pleskot’s monograph Fulnecké intermezzo, Ostrava 1970.
